2018 Annual TRETA Conference Recap

The 42nd Annual TRETA Conference on April 5-7, 2018 was held in Fort Worth, Texas had members in attendance representing Texas, Florida, and more!  We had a fantastic conference this year hosted at the Worthington Renaissance Hotel in downtown Fort Worth.  The hotel had a very interesting layout.

As always we started the CREI update class on Thursday afternoon with Dave Turnquist sharing some excellent advice in his presentation titled “Preparing to Teach the Adult Learner” and was followed by the esteemed Dr. Rosenauer engaging us in a discussion titled ““How do you KNOW that your students are learning: The Role of Assessment in your teaching.”  The workshop was closed by Len Elder who gave an exciting demonstration titled ““Active Learning Techniques”   These three guys were both informative and humorous during the workshop! Everyone who attended had a great time and learned a lot.

An Opening Reception (aka annual margarita party) was held on Thursday night and was sponsored by Dearborn.  It was a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and make some new ones.  We were served delicious soft tacos and drink tickets were used to purchase the traditional margarita.

Friday morning, TRETA President Jeanette Black, CREI addressed the attendees and opened up the sessions with:

“Teaching with Gusto” by Pat Strong, CREI, Educator, Coach and Mentor
“Texas Economic Update and Crystal Ball”  by Dr Jim Gains, The Real Estate Center at Texas A&M
“TREC Education Updates” by Gwen Jackson, Director of Education & Licensing (TREC) and Jennifer Wheeler, Education Manager (TREC)

The TRETA Luncheon and Annual Business Meeting was informative with the installation of our 2018-19 Officers and Directors, a vote to accept a revised set of Bylaws, and with the presentation of a $1,000 TRETA Scholarship to Stephanie Organista who is a student at San Jacinto College in Houston. We paid respect to several TRETA members who passed away this past year including Nanci Hawes, Linda Cottar and Charles McMillan. Rebecca Ray presented the Governor’s Proclamation of “Real Estate Education Week in Texas” to President Jeannette Black. Awards and Recognitions were presented to Bill Price and Rachel Cahill (Heart and Soul Award), Charlotte Goeters (Lifetime Achievement Award), and Bart Stockon and Jerry Rutledge (President’s Award).

The Friday afternoon conference sessions included “The Brave New Dawn” by Len Elder, “Appy Hour” by Dave Turnquist, CREI and finished with the “Mortgage Market Update” by Jerry Rutledge, CREI.  President’s Reception wrapped up the evening with wine and snacks in the President Suite hosted by outgoing President Jeannette Black.  It was a windy evening if you happened to be standing on the patio. Everyone  had a great time getting to know each other and catching up with old friends.

Saturday morning we started with a delicious CREI Breakfast & Awards Presentation to welcome our new and renewing CREI designees.  We then concluded our conference with sessions titled  “Marketing Your Brand” by J. Rene Ward, CREI, “Texas Law Update” by Chuck Jacobus, CREI, and “Life’s Journey in Search of Teaching Mastery” by Dr. Johnnie Rosenauer, CREI.

Those who attended the entire conference were then presented with TREC 10 hours of CE credit sponsored by Alliance Academy.  Many people received door prizes in the drawings held at the end of the conference and we also announced that our next conference in April 2019 will be held in San Antonio. Next year in San Antonio we will be POSITIONING FOR THE FUTURE!!

Many, many thanks to our exhibitors and sponsors who helped make this event possible and all of our members who attended to make our theme “Together, Teachers Excel” happen.
